Off the Dribble: Kahlil Whitney
By: T. Hood
After blazing the AAU trail averaging 20.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists for the Mac Irvin Fire, Kahlil Whitney verbally committed to the University of Kentucky in early August.
The athletic forward arguably has been the biggest riser in the 2019 class in terms of rankings and currently sits at No. 14 overall according to 247Sports. Whitney is an explosive player and prototype NBA wing with his measurables. He stands 6 foot 6 with a 7 foot wingspan at 190 pounds. He is just beginning to scratch the surface and most scouts see him with considerable upside. The Chicago native also just wrapped up an incredible high school season in New Jersey at Roselle Catholic where he played alongside current LSU Tiger, Naz Reid.
I recently caught up with Kahlil. Check it out.
T. Hood: You're a Chicago native and you moved to New Jersey last year to live with your father and play at Roselle Catholic. Discuss his impact on your game and maybe advice he gives you being that he was a big time player at Seton Hall.
KW: His impact is huge on my game. He's my trainer and we workout two times a day. He just tries to get me to go hard all the time, he knows what I'm capable of. Paying attention to detail helps me be a better player so I really listen to him.
T. Hood: You finished up a phenomenal season at Roselle last year. You all were able to win the Tournament of Champions and Union County Tournament. From an individual perspective, what are your goals for your senior year?
KW: Gatorade Player of the Year, Nasmith POY, Nike Hoop Summitt, McDonalds AA, Jordan Brand, State Championship and 3.5 GPA.
T.Hood: Outside of your father, is there anyone else that you train with?
KW: Jamar Wise (IG: WiseBasketballTraining)
T. Hood: You generated a ton of buzz this off season during AAU play. What were some of the things you focused on in terms of adding to your game or maybe refining?
KW: Not relying on my athleticism. I've been working on ball handling and creating shots off the dribble.
T. Hood: Do you remember the first time Coach Cal pulled up to one of your games? What was that like and which game/event was it?
KW: Peach Jam Invitational. It was a dream come true. I thought my recruiting stage was almost over. I was gonna cut my list the next few days. I didn't know Kentucky was gonna offer.
T. Hood: Lastly, with Tyrese Maxey, Dontaie Allen and yourself currently committed, who are some other players you're openly recruiting to UK?
KW: Vernon Carey and James Wiseman.
