Louisville Football: News and Notes
By: T. Hood
We are officially 25 days away from the opener with defending national champion Alabama. Let that sink in..
Fall camp recently started and Coach Petrino appeared to be very pleased and eager in discussing the team. He's said multiple times recently he really enjoys coaching this team and love's their work ethic. In University provided notes, it indicated the first unit offense and defense squared off quite a bit and the offense was able to move the ball down the field frequently. This takes me back to ACC Media Day when Coach Petrino made headlines by saying he believes this year's team under Puma Pass will be more balanced and ultimately better than last year's.
With the recent appendectomy surgery which has sidelined Jaylen Smith, I look forward to seeing Dez Fitzpatrick, Seth Dawkins and the others in a very talented and deep receiving core to step up. The freshman Javian Hawkins and Tutu Atwell will bring speed and playmaking as well.
Puma Pass, Jon Greenard, Dee Smith and Lukayus McNeil have been named the captains of the 2018 football squad.
There's going to be some ups and downs in our defense under new coordinator, Brian Van Gorder, but I am really excited about the talent level in the secondary. Again, the Cards are replacing four starters in the secondary, so there will be some growing pains, but there is finally some depth back there with a nice freshman class and transfers that are ready to play. The athleticism and speed is there. I love the playmaking of sophomore Tre'sean Smith and veteran Dee Smith. Former Waggener High standout Jairus Brents is now eligible to participate and has been practicing with the team.

The Cards will hold their fan fest day on Aug. 11 at Cardinal Stadium. There will be a light practice and then they will hold an autograph session afterwards.
Louisville begins the 2018 season September 1 against the Crimson Tide in the Camping World Kickoff Classic in Orlando, Florida. The contest will be televised live on ABC with an 8 pm kickoff.
